Learning the Deep, Profound and Practical Buddhist Texts

This is a 4 week series each Thursday 6:30-8pm Pacific.

Trudy Goodman shared a Buddhist passage with the teachers at InsightLA that said there would come a time when people would think Buddhists texts were not worth reading and taking to heart.  That people would want to memorize poetry with fancy words but not Buddhist practice and this is how the teachings will fade away.  We have an obstacle as English speakers because we are receiving a translation of an ancient language that sometimes uses words that don’t have meaning for us.  The Buddha was known to speak in a way that people could easily understand.  The meaning of the texts slowly came alive to me over my years of practice.  They are very practical and instructional and bring great benefit when taken as such.

The Buddha gave advice and how to create social and communal harmony, how to release feelings of resentment, how to grow a more loving heart.  And he gave advice in ways that might surprise people on how to be successful in the world or to win a large following of people or even to develop psychic powers.  In this 4-week series we will read texts that are particularly helpful and accessible for lay people and attempt to bring those teachings alive in our life.
